1. So Far Gone- Drake

In 2009, Drake was still up-and-coming, and it was even better that he was a Toronto rapper. So Far Gone was not just the title of the album, but also of his third mix tape.

You remember “Best I Ever Had”? It shook the entire world and he had some other record-breaking hits in this album.


2. Troubadour- K’Naan

“Wavin’ Flag” was one of the songs for the FIFA World Cup, and this brought the album to the limelight. The Somalian-Canadian singer and rapper featured guests like Mos Def, Damian Marley, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine in the album.

Troubadour earned him a Juno Award for artist of the year and a Polaris Music Prize short-list honour.


3. Peaches, I Feel Cream

Peaches is a total electro-shocker, and I Feel Cream is her fifth album where she teams up with collaborators, old and new.

This album was a wonder album that celebrated sexuality, and she achieved this with the help of Simian Mobile Disco, Digitalism, Soulwax, Shapemod and longtime friend Chilly Gonzales.

In all forms, Peaches continued to have fun recording the album, and this was a way anyone could know her signature style.


4. Digging Roots, We Are…

The husband and wife release We Are in 2009 and it had a taste of indigenous renaissance. This was their second album and it eventually won the Juno Award for Aboriginal album of the year.

So many players featured in this album including Kinnie Star, Tanya Tagaq and A Tribe Called Red’s Bear Witness.

They all co-produced the album and the genres in this album include the blend of blues, folk, hip-hop and rock.

5. Justin Bieber, My World

One of the biggest world debuts from Canada happened in 2009. It was from the ever cute Justin Bieber, who was previously a YouTube sensation.

He turned into a pop star after attracting many fans to his music and also being friends with popular R&B artiste, Usher. This part is clear in the video below,l as Usher was his mentor at the time.

The tracks in My World included sweet songs like “One More Time” and “One Less Lonely Girl”. Frank Ocean also admitted to being a part of the project. He is credited as the co-writer on the single “Bigger”. The success of this album is also credited to many industry giants like Usher, his manager Scooter Braun, Benny Blanco and many others.
